A project developed by the Portuguese start-up blueOASIS and the Norwegian university NTNU, which aims to revolutionise wave forecasting for various surfing disciplines using high-fidelity simulation tools and advanced supercomputing.
Today, 16 April, at 9am, the final workshop of this project funded by EEAGrants Portugal was held at the Ericeira Business Factory. As a result of the collaboration between the Portuguese start-up blueOASIS, based in Ericeira, and the Norwegian university NTNU, developer of the REEF3D tool, the results of this initiative were presented.
In addition to various members of the local surfing community, the event was attended by EEAGrants Portugal, Mafra City Council and various members of the academy. In addition to presenting the results, one of the aims was to discuss them with the local community.
The vision for the future of this project includes a high-fidelity operational model of each beach in the Reserve, which will make it possible to model and predict the swell with high precision and resolution, in order to extract metrics aimed at surfers.
However, it could also have other applications, such as analysing the impact of climate change on beaches, harbours and other coastal structures in the region. Furthermore, at a later stage, the same methodology could be replicated in other locations, both nationally and internationally.
