Celebrated for the first time in 1970, Earth Day is marked every year in more than 190 countries as a demonstration of commitment to protecting and preserving the planet's natural resources, environment and sustainability.

The annual production of plastic is around 380 million tonnes per year, when only 9% of the plastic produced so far has been recycled. This is the concern emphasised in "Planet versus Plastic" slogan chosen for the 2024 edition of Earth Day.

The theme aims to point to the everyone's responsibility to safeguard the environment and the future by committing to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health.

The aim of the EARTHDAY organisation, responsible for officially mobilising civil society for the date, is to achieve reduce production of all plastics by 60% by 2040with a view to building a plastic-free future for generations to come.
