During the Second World War, 43,000 refugees arrived in Portugal. They settled in the country's big cities, around 14,000 in Lisbon, but were later sent to smaller settlements such as Caldas da Rainha, Figueira da Foz and Ericeira. The Salazar regime feared political and economic unrest, but this phenomenon had unexpected results: economically it proved to be a success for some and socially it was a phenomenon of modernisation.
