EOLOS.MAR project evaluates the potential of renewable energy at sea with the start of measurements in Portugal

The project PRR EOLOS.MAR has just started with the aim of studying the potential of renewable energy in the Portuguese sea, with a special focus on wind energy. Co-ordinated by LNEG (National Energy and Geology Laboratory)The project is part of a wider effort to plan a more sustainable energy future, with respect for traditional activities such as fishing.

The first actions on the ground involve placing floating buoys equipped with sensors which measure wind, waves and currents. This equipment, which is visible and signposted, remains at sea for temporary periods of between 4 and 12 months and poses no danger to navigation or fishing gear.

Although each buoy creates a small immediate exclusion zone around it, no no-fishing areas will be created. Fishing is allowed in the vicinity, as long as a safe distance is respected.

According to those responsible for the project, the data collected will be used exclusively for scientific purposes and do not involve the installation of wind farms. Any future decision on energy projects will have to be subject to environmental assessment and dialogue with local communitiesincluding fishermen.

The project takes place between December 2023 and June 2026 and provides measurements at different points along the Portuguese coast. The general public and maritime professionals can ask questions at the Local captaincy or LNEG itself. There are also plans to public information sessionsEveryone is invited to take part.

Community participation is valued as a fundamental part of the processIt also ensures that the energy transition takes place in a fair, transparent and informed manner.
