Recently, the Newmen website, an online publication dedicated to modern men (which covers topics such as society, lifestyle and culture), published an article entitled "Portugal's most sought-after cities": on this list Ericeira [ndr: which is a village, not a city] comes first, with 60,510 monthly searches.

The main point of this piece is to show a collection of places with good food, culture and "hidden gems" for those who want to get away from the big city crowds and enjoy the quieter atmosphere of other places with less than 20,000 inhabitants.

Ericeira has 60,500 monthly searches on search engines

According to the website, Ericeira "is the most popular destination this year! Famous for being a surfer's paradise, it offers much more than just waves. Picturesque cobbled streets wind through the old town, showcasing traditional Portuguese architecture.

A 17th century fort watches over the fishing harbour, telling stories of the town's maritime past where the sea is bluer. Fresh seafood dominates the local cuisine and cosy seafront cafés offer the perfect place to relax and enjoy the breathtaking view of the endless sea. It has 60,500 monthly searches on search engines, far outstripping the second-placed town."

The list was originally created by Holidu.pt, a booking portal for holiday homes. Ericeira isn't the only town in the municipality in the top 10: Mafra comes in eighth place, with 33,100 searches per month.

In the first five places on the list, which is made up of more than 100 cities or regions, are Sesimbra, in second place with 49,800 searches per month, followed by Nazaré, with 49,640, Peniche with 49,600 and Caldas da Rainha with 49,500 monthly searches.
