Ericeira was distinguished as the "Best Tourism Village 2023" by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO), a specialised agency of the United Nations. This award - which recognises tourist destinations of reference with a maximum of 15,000 inhabitants, set in a landscape with an important presence of traditional activities and which share community values and lifestyles - was presented at the official ceremony held on the occasion of the 25th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, which is taking place in Uzbekistan.

 

The application submitted by Ericeira was assessed by an Independent Advisory Board, using a set of indicators in nine areas linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely:

1. Cultural and Natural Resources (SDGs 8, 11, 12 and 15);

2. Promotion and Preservation of Cultural Resources (SDGs 8, 11 and 12);

3. Economic sustainability (SDGs 5, 8, 9 and 17);

4. Social Sustainability (SDGs 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 17);

5. Environmental sustainability (SDGs 7, 12, 13, 15 and 17);

6. Tourism Development and Value Chain Integration (SDGs 8, 9, 10 and 12);

7. Governance and Prioritisation of Tourism (SDGs 9 and 17);

8. Infrastructure and Connectivity (SDGs 9 and 17);

9. Health, Safety and Security (SDG 3).

Considering the indicators under analysis, for the Mayor of Mafra, Hélder Sousa Silva, this distinction reflects "the recognition of collective work, not only of the territorial management policies implemented by the Municipality and the Parish, but also the significant contribution of those who live, work and visit Ericeira".

For the mayor, being a "Best Tourism Village" represents a double opportunity: "on the one hand, to reinforce the international recognition of the traditional fishing village which, endowed with unique cultural characteristics, has developed as a holiday destination and, more recently, as a privileged place for gliding sports, recognised as a World Surfing Reserve; on the other hand, to join a global network of reference tourist destinations, sharing good practices and experiences".
