2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the International Sea Urchin Festival. A decade of promoting and dignifying a unique delicacy that will be celebrated at the Ericeira Municipal Market, from 21 to 30 March, in what is already an obligatory annual meeting point in the municipality of Mafra.
On 21 March, at 6pm, the doors of the Ericeira Municipal Market will open for the official inauguration of another edition of the event that has established itself as one of the most important dedicated to a single product, promoting it in all its aspects (gastronomic, scientific, academic, tourist, etc.). In addition to the seafood court, which will be open from 12pm to 8pm on 22, 23, 29 and 30 March, with various seafood cuisine suggestions and wines from the region, on Saturdays (22 and 29 March) there will be a science workshop led by MARE (Centre for Marine and Environmental Sciences) for those who want to learn more about the marine ecosystem and the life cycle of the sea urchin.
The show cookings are always a highlight of the festival, because not only do they give you the chance to taste the sea urchin in creative and original preparations, but they also allow you to interact closely with the cookery schools and universities present and with the guest chefs. A luxurious line-up that includes national and international names.
As has always been the case over the last 10 years, the festival is not confined to the Ericeira market, but has other moments that emphasise its presence in the local community. This year there are 24 restaurants in the municipality of Mafra that have accepted the challenge of taking part in the adjacent gastronomic showcase, pledging to put at least one dish prepared with sea urchins on the menu during the festival period.
This festival is a joint initiative organised by Mafra Town Hall and gastronomic consultant Nuno Nobre.
